A man comes home from prison. His wife has moved on. His children don't recognise him.
An unassuming meteorologist returns to a house that has rearranged itself around his absence. He stays anyway, slowly, patiently — the way weather is patient — and waits for the family to come back to him.
The film belongs to Nana Jorjadze and Irakli Kvirikadze — a Georgian director and writer, married to each other, who had spent their working lives between Tbilisi, Paris and the festival circuit. Jorjadze won the Caméra d'Or at Cannes for her first feature and remains the only Georgian director ever nominated for an Academy Award, for A Chef in Love. Kvirikadze had been writing and directing since the Soviet years — The Swimmer, The Small Town of Anara — films that took their prizes quietly and kept being found again.
Maria von Heland wrote on it with them, the one voice from outside Georgia, toward a film spoken in Georgian and Russian and shot across a five-country co-production. What carried over from their earlier work was the register — warm, deadpan, faintly magical. A man who can call down rainbows and still cannot call his own family back.
